The Sand Creek Massacre Although the American general public in the 1860s believed that Native American Indians were nothing more then savages, there are a few cases where the general public were sympathetic to Native Americans. The Sand Creek Massacre is the most public example of where the United States government mistreated Indians, as well as an ideal example of where the public was outraged at the handling of Indians. The Sand Creek Massacre occurred on the 29th of November 1864 forty-two miles away from Fort Lyon Colorado, on this day friendly Cheyenne and Arapahoe Indians were attacked by a group of Colorado militia led by a man called Colonel John Chivington. (History.com, n.d.) The Sand Creek Massacre was a horrific tragedy in which many terrible war crimes were committed. Important People Colonel Chivington is one of the most prominent figures of the Sand Creek Massacre. Colonel Chivington was the commanding officer of the Colorado Militia. Chivington was born in 1821; he later became a Methodist minister in 1844 who preached against slavery. When the Civil War started he signed on for a fighting commission, in 1862 Chivington had worked his way to the position of Major in the Colorado Volunteer Regiment. He was herald as a military hero for his role in battle of Glorietta Pass. (THE WEST, 2001) Tensions between whites and Indians were approaching its climax in the middle of Chivington political career. He openly opposed the idea of having peace talks with Native Americans. (THE WEST, 2001) Chivington was a known bigot, who was known to have said I have come to kill Indians, and believe it is right and honorable to use any means under Gods heaven to kill Indians. (A Closer Look, 2002) In August of 1864, he declared that the Cheyennes will have to be roundly whipped or completely wiped out before they will be quiet. I say that if any of them are caught in your vicinity, the only thing to do is kill them. (THE WEST, 2001) On November 29 of 1864 Colonel John M. Chivington lead a group of Colorado Militia of around 700-750 to attack the peaceful Cheyenne and Arapaho Indian reservation, that had approximately only 500 men, women, and children. (Documents on the Sand Creek Massacre, 1864-1865) Colonel Chivington, in the interrogation by the Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War had reported that there were about eleven (11) or twelve (12) hundred Indians: of these about seven hundred were warriors, and the remainder were women and children. (U.S., Congress, House of Representatives, 1865) When Chivington was questioned by the Committee on the Conduct of the War about the number of Indians killed including women and children killed he responded by saying I judge there were five hundred or six hundred Indians killed, and From all I could learn, I arrived at the conclusion that but few women or children had been slain. (U.S., Congress, House of Representatives, 1865) However the actual numbers are more likely around 105 women and children and 28 men, as well as mutilating the dead and wounded. (A Closer Look, 2002) Chivington was asked for what reason did he commit the attack and what led he believe that Black Kettles Cheyenne Indians were aggressive towards whites. To wh ich he replied My reason for making the attack on the Indian camp was, that I believed the Indians in the camp were hostile to the whites. That they were of the same tribes with those who had murdered many persons and destroyed much valuable property on the Platte and Arkansas rivers during the previous spring, summer and fall was beyond a doubt. (U.S., Congress, House of Representatives, 1865) In his testimony, Chivington was asked if he had any reason to suspect that Black Kettle and the Indians with him had been peaceful. Chivington responded by saying I had no reason to believe that Black Kettle and the Indians with him were in good faith at peace with the whites. (U.S., Congress, House of Representatives, 1865) This is in fact a boldfaced lie because several witnesses testified that Captain Soule and Lieutenant Cramer led a large contingency of Fort Lyon soldiers that confronted Chivington and told him that Black Kettle had surrendered. (U.S., Congress, House of Representatives , 1865) Eventually Chivington was court marshaled for his part in the massacre, nothing came of it because he was no longer part of the Army, and hence no charges were ever made. He did however lose his military and political power in Colorado, he moved back to Ohio where he attempted to run for a state legislature seat but was quickly shut out. He then moved to Denver where he became a deputy sheriff until his death in 1892. (THE WEST, 2001) Black Kettle was the Chief of the Southern Cheyenne. Black Kettle lived on an enormous area of land that reached from western Kansas to eastern Colorado which was given to the Indians on the conditions of the signing of Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851. The 1851 Fort Laramie Treaty defined territory for each tribal group in order to end intertribal rivalry and it permitted travelers and railroad workers on the Platte River Road. (Nd.gov,) However this treaty was broken after the discovery of gold at Pikes Peak in 1859. Instead of removing the unlawful settlers, the U.S. government forced the Southern Cheyenne to sign a new treaty forfeiting most of their lands, with the exception of the Sand Creek reservation. Even though the Sand Creek reservation was inhabit, not able to grow crops and not close to any herds of buffalo, Black Kettle was fearful of the United States Massive Military power and what would happen if they refused. Due to the lack of food and supplies, younger male Indians started to raid settlers and wagon trains. In the spring of 1864 a Colorado Militia group attacked a group of peaceful Cheyenne Indians. This horrid incident sparked Indian uprisings all over the Great Plains region. Black Kettle knowing that even with the Civil War going on the whites still had a vastly superior military power, so in order to secure his tribes survival, Black Kettle went to Fort Weed, Colorado, where he was promised th at his tribe would be safe as long as they stayed on the Sand Creek reservation. (Black Kettle, 2001) Colonel Chivington however, attacked the Sand Creek reservation, by some miracle Black Kettle and his wife both survived the attack. Even having lived though the carnage at Sand Creek he continued to advocate peace with the U.S. After being moved to another reservation, Black Kettle signed the Medicine Lodge Treaty of 1867, which moved his people onto two smaller reservations in modern day Oklahoma. History tends to have a way of repeating itself. On the 27th of November 1868, just two days shy of the fourth anniversary. On this fateful day Lieutenant Colonel Custer attacked Black Kettles village and both Black Kettle and his wifes luck had run out and they were killed. (Black Kettle, 2001) The Battle of Sand Creek The Battle of Sand Creek, as the Rocky Mountain News called it, was stated that it was Among the brilliant feats of arms in Indian warfare, the recent campaign of our Colorado volunteers will stand in history with few rivals, and none to exceed it in final results. (Rocky Mountain News, p.1) Although Colonel Chivington portrayed the attack on the Sand Creek reservation as a battle in which there were, at the time of the attack, about eleven (11) or twelve (12) hundred Indians: of these about seven hundred were warriors (U.S., Congress, House of Representatives, 1865). However in truth there were only about 500 men, women and children according to John Smith in the village. (Smith, 1865) The Indians were in fact peaceful and tried to surrender. When the Indians first saw the soldiers, they rushed to go and get the United States Indian interpreter and special Indian agent John S. Smith who was stationed in the village in order to get intelligence on the Indians. Black Kettle ran this American flag up to the top of his lodge, with a small white flag tied right under it, as he had been advised to do in case he should meet with any troops out on the prairies. (Smith, 1865) That is a crystal clear picture of a peaceful group of Indians, the white flag of truce or peace is a near universal symbol. Regardless of this the soldiers attacked with artillery and then foot soldiers swept the Creek bed, killing every Indian they could find, often hunting down fleeing children. Kill them big and small, (Smith, 1865) Chivington was reported saying. After six hours, about 150 Indians, a quarter of the camps population, lay dead. The soldiers took three prisoners, all children. A doze n soldiers were killed, some apparently by friendly fire in the frenzy. (Smith, 1865) Much less then what Chivington who estimated that between three and four hundred of the savages got away with their lives, and taking into account the huge exaggeration of about eleven (11) or twelve (12) hundred Indians: of these about seven hundred were warriors at the camp. (U.S., Congress, House of Representatives, 1865). Atrocities The Sand Creek Massacre was packed full with scores of despicable atrocities. The Sand Creek Massacre in itself was horrific, more women and children were killed then actually warriors. Out of 150 dead Indians more than 70 percent were women and children. Seventy dead bodies lying there; the greater portion women and children. There may have been thirty warriors, old and young; the rest were women and small children of different ages and sizes. (Smith, 1865) This was said by John Smith a Native American interpreter in his congressional testimony. Furthermore there was massive mutilation to the corpses of the deceased Indians. In John Smiths testimony he declared I saw the bodies of those lying there cut all to pieces, worse mutilated than any I ever saw before; the women cut all to pieces. (Smith, 1865) When asked how they were cut? Smith replied With knives; scalped; their brains knocked out; children two or three months old; all ages lying there, from sucking infants up to warriors. (Smith, 1865) Even Mr. Smith half-breed son was not spared, even though several officers thought that the kid could be handy as a translator and guide. (Smith, 1865) Those are the more extreme, of course there was the usually spoils of war, or looting depending on who you ask. The Repercussions The Sand Creek Massacre forced the United States government to reconsider the treatment of Native Americans. Many members of congress started to look into the mistreatment of Indians and stated To maintain peace with the Indian, let the frontier settler treat him with humanity, and railroad directors see to it that he is not shot down by employees in wanton cruelty. In short, if settlers and railroad men will treat Indians as they would treat white men under similar circumstances, we apprehend but little trouble will exist. (New Directions, 1868) After the Sand Creek Massacre there were two major conflict category events that involved Indians happened, the Battle of Little Big Horn and the Wounded Knee Massacre. Many people in the United States do not know that the Sand Creek Massacre was a major turning point in the treatment of Native Americans. This is due to the Civil War that was in full swing at this point in time. Because of the Civil War the Indian problem, this is including the treatment and the general racism against Indians, took a backseat in favor of the issue of racism towards African Americans. Drunk Comparison After around two hours in a bar the way I carry myself is definitely different from the time I walked in. I’ve never considered myself much of a drinker, especially before I came to college. I had never appreciated the way beer had tasted, or it could have been only because I was exposed to some of the more disgusting ones. When I lived in my hometown only a few months earlier I attended tons of parties. Most of them were always hosted by the fellow alcoholic teenagers, and supplied the cheapest beer they could get hold of. I can recall filling my cup with the foamy cold beer that poured from the tap, and sipping it for hours. â€Å"I just don’t like beer!† I would reply to my male friends when asked why I wasn’t drinking much. After a few hours at the party I would realize that I was the most sober one there. The first day I came to Fredonia, I went to check the bars out. I first drank a few beers I recognized and then asked around for the names of some mixed drinks. The first one I tried was a Blue Whale; I loved it. I figured; if one mixed drink tasted good I’m sure that others would too. Drinking had finally turned into something that was fun to me. Now after partying for a few hours, I was no longer the sober one in the group. On my way to a party or a bar I am completely sober. I am aware of the surroundings around me and am capable of walking in a straight line. When I speak, my language is pretty much perfect and everyone has a clear understanding of what I am trying to say. In my mind I know what is exactly going on and concentrating on something is easy. Knowing that I am on my way to a party or bar I tend to be excited. I am usually energetic and hyper; realizing that I will finally be having fun after all the work I had done during the week. As I continue to make my way to my destination I am aware that the way I feel and think will most likely change by the end of the night.

The Tate commercial became an instant hit with its office humor of politically correct antics and depiction of cubicle mishaps, which appealed to the undervalued Gen Xers and caused the ad to go viral across the Internet.After the Tate commercial aired, the Reebok website underwent 20 commercial downloads per second and the Reebok online store traffic increased seven-fold, creating a viral phenomenon. Ultimately, Mickey Pant understood the cultural changes that characterized the life of Gen Xers and relied upon the Internet to carry the campaign. The growing need for companies to create a more interactive and transactional experience with its customers is expansive, allowing for such outlets as the Internet and mobile advertising to become more attractive. The Gen Xers and the public related to the commercials because they were office based and because a large linebacker would tackle employees that everyone hates.We believed that Reebok understood that their target markets would see the commercial on television, like it, and then seek other ways to view or learn more about the commercials and the brand. Because Gen Xers were technology savvy and used the Internet on a regular basis, even after the commercials had stopped airing on television, the public would watch the commercials and advertisements on Reebok. com. We felt like this type of campaign was very capable of gaining the attention and respect from members of Generation X, bec ause of one general thought: it was something that they could easily identify with. This series of commercials showed instances that Gen Xers were familiar with and had some sort of emotional connection to.In many office cultures, it is considered very rude to do such things as, drink the last pot of coffee and not refill the coffee pot, or to fart when in a small elevator when there are other people in there; those were the norms that the Reebok ads sought to use. According to Rawson Thurber, the man who played Terry Tate, â€Å"(the popularity) has very little to do with football and a lot to do with how much people hate office culture† (Thurber, 10). To us, that meant that Gen Xers enjoyed the commercials so much, not because they were dedicated to the Reebok band, but because the commercials depicted things that they could easily identify with.Even though there were so many different things that could have gone wrong with this campaign, it went off without a hitch. The first reason is because the city in which I am from has a very high concentration of Christian men, woman, and children. The second reason I chose Christianity as my topic is due to the lack of other religious entities where I am from. I researched other religions such as Buddhism, and Hinduism, however I came up short in finding people who follow that type of worship. And although I consider myself a Christian, I find myself to be ill educated in the proper following of that religion. Christianity is the worship of a single God, and the following of God’s son, Jesus Christ. It is the belief of Christians that Jesus died for our sins, and rose from his death to lead us in life. During his life, Jesus was persecuted because of what some say was blasphemy. And as such he was considered an outcast by the Romans, as well as many other cultures. Christianity is also the most followed form of worship in the entire world with an estimated 2 billion followers worldwide. What follows is an interview with an evangelist who is completely dedicated to Christianity, and was willing to share his daily living, and worship rituals with me. What prompted you to choose Christianity as your faith? You mean, why did I choose Christianity? Yes. Okthere is a difference. I didnt choose Christianity, but Christ chose me. No one really wants to come to Jesus in a real sense, we just want to make ourselves feel better about all the bad things we do so we make religions to do ceremonies in which makes us feel better about ourselves. But I have a relationship with God and it sometimes isnt comfortable. Just like being married, it has its good times but when you dont do the right thing you get that look, and the conviction of sin, and I hate thatas all men do. The Bible says that no one comes to the father unless he is drawn and that we are enemies of God from birth because we love sin more than Holiness. But true Christianity isnt about feeling good all the time. Forgive me for sounding uneducated, but does the Bible really say that about no one comes to the father unless he is drawn? Yes. John 6:44 says No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. And it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away; they have together become worthless; there is no one who does well, not even one. Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit. The poison of vipers is on their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know. There is no fear of God before their eyes. Thats Romans 3:10. This is the importance of Hermeneutics. It is the study of how to properly read the bible, to understand it not just at face value but the history and how it fits. People read the bible and take a verse and make it their own when it isnt meant to be that way. This is why there are so many atheists. If Christians would really read and obey the Bible there would be no reason for them to doubt. Everyone says that Jesus is love and goes about sinning openly because He loves and will forgive, but they forget that He will judge every work of man. What was the faith practiced by your mother, and father? Well, none really. My dad claimed Baptist and my mother Christian Science. Neither ever went to church and would make most Baptist’s faint if they ever heard them talk. But, they were good people and sent my Sis and I off to church so they could have some quiet time. An excuse to sleep late, and not cook breakfast. Ok you said you were an evangelist correct? Yeah, sure, title me. I am just a Christian looking for truth and a better me. Not a convenient me, but a better, truly better, me. Christian is good enough for me, I will profile you as you wish to be profiled, I simply thought you had mentioned that you were an evangelist. I honestly am not sure what that entails, so either way is fine by me. An evangelist just talks to people about Jesus and shows them why the Bible is true and why you can believe that Jesus is the only way to Heaven, scientifically and historically and biblically and vs. other belief systems if needed I understand. Ok let me ask you this. How long have you been an evangelist? Like, really going out and talking to people, about a year, but I have been sharing with people since I was 16 or so. You choose. Some people go out and pass out tracts which are what I have been doing for a year now. Before I just talked to people I knew or family and friends, that sort of thing. Ok, why did you, or do you desire to be an evangelist, and preach Christianity to others? Honestly, I hate the idea I find myself scared before I go out and afraid I might get in a fight or laughed at. It takes a lot of courage to tell someone about what God did for them by sending His son to die on a cross for our sins. Most people think they are perfect and dont nee a savior, or that truth is relative. There are arguments and everything. There is no magic formula or word you say that makes one believe. It is all in the Holy Spiritback to the verse that no one comes unless they are drawn by God. People hate me telling them that they have been told a lie and that they might go to hell, that Im judging them. But they fail to see the fact that I believe what the Bible says to be true not on just an experience but on real facts, and that is so hard to do. Actually, it’s impossible. I have never once convinced someone of that fact. God had already prepared their hearts before I even spoke to them, so when the words leave my mouth it is not I who speak but the truth of the word of God speaking. Does that make sense? Yes actually it does make sense to me. Good. I evangelize not for my benefit but because I owe a debt to Christ for all he has done. If a stranger took a bullet for you, wouldnt you feel compelled to do whatever you could to show that person you were grateful? That is why I go, because he asks me to. And so I am compelled not for me but Him. That is why Apostle Paul said so many times that it is the Power if Christ that compels Him, the power of His Death for us compels him. Ok I have to move on to another question or I am going to end up having to write a book. Were you ever chastised because of your faith in God? And if so, how did you handle it? In what way do you mean? Made fun of, or put down basically because you believe in God. Ah. Yes all the time. I chat frequently. Let me think of a good one. This is hard. My most unwelcomed criticism comes from my sternness in my belief that the whole bible is to be practiced. Mostly people who are agnostic who dont believe in God are the hardest. They dont believe in what they cant see and that is the problem. Proving something you cant see touch, taste, and smell or hear. Thats all I can say on that. I just get called an idiot and stuff. But thats about all. I am grateful for that. No fights yet. What do you believe are the defining points of your faith? In other words, what was it that made you say this is the faith for me? Just the fact that the evidence so clearly points to a creator, scientifically, and the other religions just dont line up right. There are too much in view if whats best for Man and not what does God want. What are the important holidays and traditions of this religion? Christmas, Easter, Good Friday etc How has religion shaped your life? It has shaped my life to be more than I thought I could be, given me hope. What are the challenges, if any, to practicing this particular religion? I mentioned that at the beginning of your questions. In comparison to another religion, I would have to say that similar instances occur both in Christianity, and in Judaism. Judaism does not characterize itself as a religion so much as a way of life. Thus, Judaism has also been characterized as a culture or as a civilization. To religious Jews, Jewish people hood is closely tied to their relationship with God, and thus has a strong theological component. This relationship is encapsulated in the notion that Jews are a chosen people. Christianity, on the other hand, is characterized by its claim to universality, which marks a significant break from Jewish identity and thought. Christians believe that Christianity represents the fulfillment of Gods promise to Abraham and the nation of Israel, that Israel would be a blessing to all nations. Jews and Christians seek authority from many of the same basic books, but they conceive of these books in significantly different ways. Traditionally, both Judaism and Christianity believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, for Jews the God of the Tanakh, for Christians the God of the Old Testament, the creator of the universe. Both religions reject the view that God is entirely immanent, and within the world as a physical presence, (although Christians believe in the incarnation of God). Both religions reject the view that God is entirely transcendent, and thus separate from the world, as the pre-Christian Greek Unknown God. Both religions reject atheism on one hand and polytheism on the other. Judaism teaches that the purpose of the Torah is to teach us how to act correctly. Gods existence is a given in Judaism, and not something that most authorities see as a matter of required belief. Much of Christianity also teaches that God wants people to perform good works, but all branches hold that good works alone will not lead to salvation, which is called Legalism. In both religions, ones offenses against the will of God are called sin. These sins can be thoughts, words, or deeds. Both Jews and Christians regard pregnancy as a gift from God, and hold children to be miracles. Differences between Christianity and Islam are noted below. Islam’s do not believe in the Trinity, whereas Christians do. In Islam God has 99 different names, many of them depict His beautiful aspects (jamal), and some of them depict His power, authority and grandeur (jalal). Christians currently emphasize the beautiful aspects of God (i.e. God is Love) The Quran teachings may be summed up as follows: (1) Christ was neither crucified nor killed by the Jews, notwithstanding certain apparent circumstances which produced that illusion in the minds of some of the enemies; and (2) Jesus was taken up to God. Christians believe that Jesus was crucified on a cross. Closing: Christianity is a highly diverse multicultural religion that spans the globe. And although there are many different religions, and many different practices, Christianity seems to be the mainstay of people all over the world. By interviewing an Evangelist, I have not only broadened my insight into Christianity, but I have also further cemented my belief in God, and what he stands for. But not only have I been able to further root myself into Christianity, I have also gained a new and profound respect for people who practice, or worship through other religions. Although I don’t believe in the religion, or religions that they may hold true too, I do have a broader respect for those who choose to take up another means of religion as their daily way of life.
